Doddie's Triple Crown

North 500 Motorhomes supports Doddie Aid charity cycle for third year with their journey from Melrose to Dublin.

A gruelling 700-mile charity cycling challenge inspired by rugby legend Doddie Weir is already closing in on its £1 million fundraising target—before the riders have even turned a pedal.

Doddie’s Triple Crown 2026, will see a team of cyclists, led by former Scotland captain Rob Wainwright, travel from Melrose to Dublin over four days, starting Tuesday 10th March to raise vital funds for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

The journey covers roughly 700 miles across the UK and Ireland, finishing in Dublin just ahead of Scotland’s Six Nations clash with Ireland. A fitting finale for a fundraising effort driven by rugby spirit.

Speaking ahead of the challenge, Rob Wainwright said: "This year is bigger and better than ever. A lot of communities come together to make this happen, and at the centre of it all is Doddie. He’s not here anymore, but the movement that he has set in motion, three years after we lost him, is gathering momentum rather than fading away."

The event has already captured huge support, with fundraising totals on course to reach £1 million before the riders even set off, highlighting the growing momentum behind the foundation’s mission to find effective treatments and ultimately a cure for motor neurone disease (MND).

Wainwright added: "We’re peddling hope, that’s the way we see it. We will continue to peddle hope. All this money will go to research so we can get drugs that slow down the progression for all sufferers of MND. To give them more quality of life. Treatment for the vast majority of MND sufferers hasn’t moved on at all since he was diagnosed.

The thing for people with MND is that their clock is ticking at a different rate than you and I. Anything that delays them having treatment radically changes their outlook. That’s why we’re doing this, that’s why we’re passionate about it. There is no point in doing this unless it brings around some real change."

Behind the scenes, a number of businesses are supporting the challenge, including North 500 Motorhomes, who are providing Rob Wainwright and Kathy Weir, wife of the late Doddie Weir, with motorhomes to support their journey.

Callum Munro, Manager at North 500 Motorhomes, said:
"The focus of this event is rightly on the riders and the incredible work being done by the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. We’re simply proud to play a small part in supporting the teams behind the challenge and helping such an important cause."
"This is our third year supporting Rob and Doddie Aid and seeing the level of support this event receives each year shows just how much Doddie’s legacy continues to inspire people."

In a nice twist of fate, the ride’s “Triple Crown” title was chosen long before it emerged that Scotland themselves are in contention for a rugby Triple Crown during the 2026 Six Nations, adding an unexpected sporting storyline to the challenge.

The foundation was established by Weir in 2017 following his diagnosis with MND and has since committed millions of pounds to research aimed at tackling the disease. With the fundraising target already close to being achieved ahead of the start line, organisers hope Doddie’s Triple Crown 2026 could become one of the most successful rides yet.
